Click on the thumbnail for a larger image | Leon Hi! My name is Leon. I`m really glad you`ve stopped to read my description, because when most people see my photo here, they just whizz on past to the next dog. I think it`s because I`m a greyhound. The girls here at the Sanctuary tell me I`m a lovely, handsome boy, but most people don`t think a black dog like me is as lovable as other dogs. But you know, I`ve got a big, gentle heart and I`m such a placid, easy-going boy. I love cuddles and any little bit of attention. I`ve had a hard life up to now training to be a racing machine and I was too slow so my owner didn`t want me anymore. I think I deserve a loving home as much as any other dog and if you`d only come and see me, I think you`d be pleasantly surprised to find that everything I`ve written about myself here is true! I know it will take a very long time to find me a home because most people won`t give me a chance. It breaks the girls` hearts to see me still here week after week when all my doggy friends here at the sanctuary find homes much more quickly. But I won`t give up hope just yet - I know there is someone out there for me, too. The Sanctuary phone number? 063 91110. CONTACT:Limerick Animal Welfare (087 6371044 or 063 91110) email |
Click on the thumbnail for a larger image | Ayhash This is a greyhound who has impressed several people. Big, gentle, attentive but undemanding, this relaxed and quiet and quite handsome gentleman has been nothing but perfect since the day he arrived. Content and appreciative with food, water, comfort, warmth and a little attention, 3 and a half year old Ayhash is what I would call a no bother sort of dog - you hardly know he's there, but when you look for him you find him watching you. Arriving here with bones protruding and scars on his body, he has quickly gained weight and is turning into a striking gentleman of a greyhound. Leona is incredibly pretty and has a very playful mischievious nature. She has some condition to gain and she has a scar on the left side of the crown of her head. We do not think she was well looked after until now, however, despite this, she is full of the joys of spring and is an outgoing confident little girl. Leona loves everyone and bounces up to you for hugs and kisses. She loves to play and would play all day if she could. Shes fit and agile and very energetic. Leona gets on great with her kennel mates and adores when its time to go playing in the fields with them. Leona would make a perfect companion for another young dog who also loves to play. Click on the thumbnail for a larger image | Sofi BOOKED. Young Sofi arrived here in mid-June from another rescue, who took her in when she was in poor condition and extremely frightened. Although she improved in all ways in their care, she needed a little extra TLC, and so here she has proved herself to be a merry little girl who likes to romp and play. She is very good on the leash and gets along very well with all the dogs. Sofi is still shy or frightened of new people, but is rapidly improving. She has also gained weight and is learning some manners as well. An affectionate girl who is up for a belly rub when she feels relaxed, Sofi seeks a quiet home where she can continue to learn that people aren't so bad after all. Click on the thumbnail for a larger image | Murphy Murphy is a blue-fawn youngster, only about 18 months old, and is a failed racing dog. Gentle and quiet and friendly, Murph has turned out to be quite a good candidate for cat-socialising, and he is doing very well. His sister Peanut was recently homed to a couple with 2 cats and is doing well so far. A bit on the large side, he makes up for it by being very good on the leash, though he finds leaping into the car a bit of a challenge. Once in, however, he's fine. Click on the thumbnail for a larger image | Stacey Stacey is a three year old ex racing greyhound. Shes a very pretty girl, Stacey has a quiet coat with some grey markings on her face. Stacey is not long with us and at the moment she is very shy and timid. She is a bit unsure of life outside the racing kennels. She is a sweetheart and tends to stand back and look around taking everything in. We feel she hasn't spend much time with people. Stacey isn't used to being shown affection. However we know that in time, with lots of tlc and attention from us she will come around. She enjoys her walks on the lead and trots off happily. Stacey is so well behaved and gets on very well with her kennel mates. We hope very soon Stacey will learn how to live again and enjoy life. We'd love her to get into a home as soon as possible where she will learn much quicker than in the kennels. Click on the thumbnail for a larger image | Dorcha Dorcha is a two year old female greyhound. She failed her racing trials so her owner no longer wanted her. Dorcha is not as confident as her kennel mates. She is very shy and reserved and at times appears withdrawn and very sad. Dorcha doesn't push herself foward for attention like the other dogs, she tends to stand her with her head down. Dorcha doesn't run up to you or play like the others and seems have very little interest in what is happening around her. We feel that she had very little socialisation until she came to us. Dorcha doesn't run or hide from you and if you kneel down beside her and rub her she adores it, she starts to fall asleep and if you stop she will nudge your hand to rub her again. Dorcha has little confidence and is very unsure of herself so we'd love to find her a home where her new owner will spend lots of time with her helping her confidence to grow. Dorcha is so gentle and sweet and we know underneath all that shyness there is a great little girl bursting to come out. Dorcha is a small sized greyhound, she has a lovely black coat and four white socks which make her look so cute. We'd love to see Dorcha settled in her new home so that she can learn to live again and be happy. She will be spayed and a homecheck will be required before Dorcha goes to her new home. CONTACT:Cork Dog Action Welfare Group (086-3457488) email |

Mikey now has settled down quite a bit, though he does still get himself very wound up at the sight of a leash or, his very favorite thing in the whole world: PEOPLE. Mikey adores people, but is over exuberant. This will lessen as time passes. As it is now, he calms the moment someone just puts a hand on his side - a sign that he is just starving for affection. He is a lovely friendly boy, black with white speckles on his coat, who gets along with all the other dogs. I am very affectionate , very lively and still very much puppyish in my ways . I still love to chew on things and haven`t yet outgrown my teething stage , however I am very good with all ages of humans and also other dogs . I will need to be a house living pet as us greyhounds need and appreciate a warm and comfortable place to live and thrive on human company. Contrary to popular belief we do not need lots of exercise but rather a few short regular walks each day to keep us in tip top condition . Greyhounds make wonderful and loyal pets and are usually fairly undemanding in our daily needs compared to lots of other breeds . I am flea`d , wormed , vaccinated , microchipped , spayed / neutered. A minimum adoption donation is requested which helps towards medical / health costs and enables the shelter to save more dogs , contact shelter for details . All dogs need a dog license , these are processed at shelter euro12.70 payable to county council . Click on the thumbnail for a larger image | Gavin Having just turned 1 in April 2009, Gavin is a very happy and biddable boy. He gets along with the other dogs in his group but does try to get away with being a bit bossy. Great on the leash and in the car too, Gavin loves water, and often has his front legs IN the water bucket. Playful, handsome, and quite clever, Gavin had a rough start but is now well on his way to being a wonderful pet. CONTACT:The Orchard Greyhound Sanctuary (0868601674) email |

Don’t be fooled though as this guy does not really act his age, he still loves to have a bit of a play around, likes going for walks, gets on well with other dogs, travels well, likes children and loves his dinner, he has no outward signs of old age at all, not even when he tries to fit himself onto a computer chair. Click on the thumbnail for a larger image | HUGO Young, affectionate, cat friendly boy. Hugo is a dear little soul who has a lovely greeting and much tail wagging for anyone who comes to visit. He loves playing outside with the other dogs in his foster home whatever the weather. Hugo does have a previous leg injury, but this does not stop him from enjoying himself. His leg is getting stronger, no problem at all running around, but can limp a bit when he initially gets up. Extremely clean in the house, and is very happy with his quilt on the floor rather than the sofa. Hugo is well behaved on the lead and has been to town walking and is not bothered by traffic etc. Getting very good at coming to whistle, however will ignore you the odd time, but early days yet. Hugo is no problem with the resident cat, and doesn't take any notice of him at all - even when the cat ambushes him! Click on the thumbnail for a larger image | Coloured Flight BOOKED OUT .My name is Coloured Flight / pet name Freddy . As you can see I am a large male greyhound approx 3 years old . If you look closely you can see that I have lots of minor wounds and scars and am pretty underweight – generally a fairly neglected dog ! Many greyhounds like me end up in dog pounds purely because we are either no good for racing or have finished our racing days . Most of us get destroyed and forgotton . I have been very lucky in that I have been taken from the pound and placed under the care of the shelter , mainly due to the fact that I have a fantastic and gentle temperament and interact very well with all ages of humans and also other dogs and cats . My big wish is that more people here in Ireland would consider a greyhound as a companion , we make excellent and undemanding pets and when in full and proper health are a stunning sight to see .As we are thin skinned we need to be house living pets with a warm and comfortable bed which we will be happy enough to lie in nearly all day . I will require spacious and secure garden / yard / radio fence area to ensure my safety at all times as well as 2 daily walks of 30 minutes . I am flea`d , wormed , vaccinated , microchipped and neutered. Although I come free the shelter requests a minimum adoption donation which helps towards covering my medical and health costs and enables the shelter to help save more dogs , please contact the shelter for details . All dogs released from the shelter must have a dog license , these can be processed at the shelter and cost euro12.70 payable to monaghan county council . By adopting me you are helping to save the lives of innocent dogs that would have otherwise been humanely destroyed in the pound as well as gaining a marvellous new family member . Although not ready to leave here just yet I can be viewed / pre booked at any time . I am residing at Carrick Dog Shelter , Lisdoonan , Carrickmacross , Co Monaghan . 042 9664236 / 087 9634121 . Click on the thumbnail for a larger image | Bugsy Bugsy is a three year old ex racing greyhound. He affectionately got his name from his ears, they stick right up like bugs bunny. However for his photo shoot Bugsy wouldn't show of his ears, but we hope to catch him again when he's not looking. Bugsy is a beautiful looking boy, very nicely marked. However his teeth aren't looking the best at the moment, he will need a full dental at the veterinary clinic. Bugsy can be timid but in a bashful way when he meets you first. Once he knows you, you are his friend for life and this means being licked to death everytime he sees you. Bugsy can be very babylike but in a lovely way, he will do anything for a cuddle. When Bugsy is pottering around the garden he is so happy, we think he starting to relax and is getting used to life away from the racing kennels. We do think once Bugsy gets into a home he will come on in leaps and bounds. He really is a sweetheart and is going to make a lovely pet. Bugsy will be neutered and a home check will be required before he goes to his new home. CONTACT:Cork Dog Action Welfare Group (086-3457488) email |

Click on the thumbnail for a larger image | Arrian Arrian is a magnificent 16 month old big baby. About 30 inches/76 cm tall at the top of his back, he towers over several of the dogs here. Arriving a bit frightened of people due to having been very badly treated, he is very nicely coming out of his shell and learning to enjoy life. He gets along well with the other dogs, is good on the leash and in the car, and although he has gotten loose twice, stayed nearby and was very easy to get back. Now turning into a sensible and affectionate boy, at this point he would need to go to an experienced and confident owner.
